A doctors diagnosis is needed as soon as possible which is as soon as any symptoms start to appear. Many fungal and bacterial infections of the genitals get incorrectly diagnosed as a yeast infection for the simple reason it's the easiest infection to purchase a cure for, and a yeast infection is the most common infection of the genitals.

Symptoms of a bladder infection include... Cloudy, smelly urine The frequency of urination will increase The amount of urine will decrease The urgency of urination increases

Antibiotics are not necessarily the answer in curing a bladder infection, and do not represent a long term cure for most people. Once a bladder infection becomes recurrent you get in the never ending cycle of taking more anti bacterial drugs that just aid the bacterial imbalance that is causing the recurrent infections. This is why more people are now treating themselves naturally with a home remedy. Learning about things is what we are living here for now. So try to get to know as much about everything, including e coli urinary tract infection whenever possible.

A bladder infection could sometimes lead to dehydration and hospitalisation if your infection isn't caught and treated in the quickest amount of time. Some adults can misdiagnose a bladder infection thinking it is a vaginal yeast infection, and will start trying to cure themselves with an OTC yeast infection cream. People always think that they know everything about everything; however, it should be known that no one is perfect in everything. There is never a limit to learning; even learning about e coli urinary tract infection.

are there any over the counter treatments for a uti? i have no insurance so i was looking for a cheaper option to a perscription. also, can the health department write me a perscription for antibiotics? if so, how much will i most likely have to pay?
  • OK replied on Wed, 16 Sep, 2009
Drink water, and I think cranberry juice-ask when you call for an appointment what is best until you can get in to be seen.......Yes the health dept. can see you and treat you for UTI, call and make yourself an appointment, they are often backed up, so you'll need to tell them how severe your symptoms are so they can see you quickly...Most are income based which mean you would bring in a copy of your pay-check sub and that would determine how much you will pay for your doctors visit..If you make low enough then the services will be very cheap, you can ask them up front how much the visit is likely to cost based on your income.....Best wishes..:)

There are not any over-the-counter treatments for UTIs because they are caused by a bacterial infection and require treatment with an antibiotic, available only with a prescription. However, the antibiotics used to treat UTIs (ciprofloxacin or nitrofurantoin), as well as the urinary tract pain reliever (phenazopyridine) usually prescribed, are relatively inexpensive prescriptions, even without insurance. To get a prescription, in most areas there are clinics or offices that take patients on income-based fees which you may find affordable. It is very important that you get an antibiotic and treat your UTI because if left untreated, UTIs will progress to infect your urinary tract further and eventually will lead to a kidney infection if left untreated. Cranberry juice is not an effective way to TREAT UTIs, and it is controversial whether or not it even effectively prevents UTIs. Until you are able to see a physician you should drink plenty of water and you also could buy phenazopyridine over-the-counter for pain relief (specifically for urinary tract pain). Do NOT take it for at least 8 hours before your appointment, as it may interfere with the UTI diagnostic test. Phenazopyridine will cause your urine to be orange or red in color. This product may be found in the feminine hygiene section of most pharmacies. If you are unsure if you have a UTI, there are home diagnostic tests also available in the feminine hygiene aisle.

Unfortunately, there are no good treatments for UTIs over the counter. Sometimes UTI's can resolve on their own but they frequently require antibiotics. I am notthat most health departments would see someone for a UTI, but there may be some free or discount clinics in your area that you could go to. UTI's are very easy to diagnose sometimes just based on your symptoms and sometimes by a simple urine test. I am not sure where exactly you live, but I know one of our local grocery stores (Schnucks) gives certain antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin for free. Of course you would need a prescription though. Also Walmart and Target offer discounted medicaitons along with many other places. Cranberry juice is effective in preventing UTIs, but not in treating them. Phenazopyridine (Azo) is helpful in relieving the symptoms but does not treat the infection. Hope this helps you.

This is what my own doctor tells me. *LOTS of Purified water - Enough to make you pee every 1/2 hour. *Cranberry Juice - NOT the kind with Sugar in it as Sugar feeds infections. Get the Sugarless Concentrate (comes in small glass bottle) and make it up yourself with purified water. * Eliminate all sugar from your diet as well as starches (which turn to sugar which feeds the bacteria) for the first few days until you get it under control. * No spices, coffee, tea, caffeine. I do not know about the prescription / costs etc. Get well soon. Good luck. SN ***BUYER BEWARE of Fluorquinolone Antibiotics - http://www.fqresearch.org/ftrf_dangerous_antibiotics_rev_2.htm Black Box Warnings. Cipro, Floxin, Levaquin, etc. They can REALLY impact the rest of your life and should not be taken lightly. http://www.fqresearch.org/
